Self-defence applications are an important part of any martial arts curriculum. Realistic self defence techniques cannot be used within sparing as they are primarily used to cause injury or quickly incapacitate a dangerous opponent, which is why Hyung Je Martial Arts dedicate specific training time to applications and techniques that would be used for street defence. These will include defence from grabs, kicks, punches and even weapons from multiple angles.
Students are taught various defence techniques to combat specific threats. These include freeing techniques to get away from grabs or holds, throws through using the attackers own force against them to get them to the ground, Joint locks or Joint manipulation to control an attacker, Choking techniques and even the application of pressure points to induce pain or even paralysis by attacking specific nerve clusters. All of these techniques are taught with the respect and responsibility that comes with using them.
For the Children’s classes we teach students our own dedicated ‘Playground self defence’ system. This concentrates more on the anti-bullying aspect of self defence and typical defence against playground type fights.
